Beyond the False Binary: How Transparent AI Partnerships Can Enhance Knowledge Building and Teacher Agency

The debate over AI in education often gets framed as a false binary: either AI replaces teachers, or we resist AI and stick to tradition. In reality, the most promising path is neither — it's transparent human-AI partnerships where teachers remain central decision-makers and AI augments their expertise rather than substituting for it.

Effective AI partnerships in education depend on several pillars: human expertise in knowledge modeling, clear communication of how AI functions and where it can err, and maintaining teachers as active participants in instructional decisions. When AI is designed to be transparent — making its reasoning and limitations visible — teachers can evaluate suggestions, correct misconceptions, and integrate technology in ways that align with their professional judgment and the needs of their students.

This approach also reframes "knowledge building." Rather than treating knowledge as something that either humans or machines produce in isolation, it recognizes knowledge building as fundamentally collaborative. It requires both deep pedagogical expertise and technological design that supports rather than obscures how learning works. Research on teacher-AI teaming describes levels of collaboration that advance toward "negotiation, constructive challenge, and co-reasoning that enhance each other's capabilities" — a model where neither teachers nor AI could achieve the same outcomes alone.

The goal is not to choose between human expertise and AI, but to design systems that leverage both. Teachers who develop fluency in orchestrating these partnerships will be better equipped to personalize learning and to prepare students for a world where working alongside AI is the norm.
